DB (Germany) and ÖBB (Austria) sell "Sparpreis" / "Sparschiene" fares — €20–30 if booked 2–4 weeks ahead. Walk-up fares are 3–4× the price.

Flight is ~1h and often €60–100 cheaper than the 4-hour train. Lufthansa, easyJet, Eurowings all run it. Or take an ICE train if you want zero hassle and don't mind the time.

Salzburg: Hohensalzburg
The fortress + Advent market combo is the highlight of Salzburg. Buy the all-inclusive ticket online — covers funicular up + entry. Market in courtyard typically runs until Dec 21 only.

Mozart's birthplace = magical Advent concerts in tiny churches. €25–45 typical. Book a week ahead — they sell out.

Book the Grand Tour with timed entry — saves you the cold queue. Christmas market in the courtyard is free to enter.

Standing-room tickets are €10–18, sold day-of from a side entrance ~80 min before curtain. Real seats book months out. Worth it either way.

Glühwein Mug Pfand
Every mulled wine comes with a €3–5 deposit on the mug. Return it to any stall in the same market for cash back, or keep it as a souvenir. Each city designs its own.

Many stalls take card now, but plenty don't. Carry €50–100 in small bills daily. Use bank ATMs (Sparkasse, Erste). Avoid "Euronet" — terrible rates.

Time Your Visits
Markets are busiest 5–8pm on weekends. Weekday afternoons (Mon–Wed) are dramatically calmer. Dusk (around 4pm) is the prettiest hour — lights on, daylight fading.

Sundays Are Quiet
In Germany and Austria, most shops close on Sundays — but Christmas markets stay open. Stock up on groceries (water, snacks) on Saturday.

December is peak. Aim for walkable city-center: Mitte (Berlin), Altstadt (Salzburg), 1st District (Vienna). Munich → near Marienplatz or Hauptbahnhof.

Old Town Square market is one of Europe's most photographed. Cut because: adds a third country & the train from Vienna eats most of a day.

Dresden, Germany
The Striezelmarkt is Germany's oldest (since 1434). Stollen capital. Cut because: between Berlin & Nuremberg geographically, would add a day.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Postcard-perfect medieval walled town. Looks like a snowglobe in December. Cut because: requires a half-day to get to, mostly day-trippers.

Seven different markets spread around the cathedral. Less Alpine, more festive Rhineland. Cut because: too far west to fit the southern route.

Lakeside alpine village. Famous photo spot. Cut because: 2h+ each way from Salzburg, Christmas-market scene is small.
